The BoneScalpel ultrasonic bone knife enables safe and controlled bone removal. It is designed to make clear, narrow cuts through hard tissue without damaging surrounding soft tissue.what is the clinical problem?

The spine is a complex structure of the body. During surgery, surgeons must be careful not to damage soft tissue such as blood vessels or nerves, which is often a challenge. Conventional cutting methods often make it difficult to cut bone without damaging soft tissue. The demanding conditions of spinal surgery can result in long operating times, which also increases surgeon hand fatigue.

How does the BoneScalpel work?

The BoneScalpel consists of two components: a sterile handpiece with interchangeable attachments and an ultrasound console. The handpiece receives an electrical signal from the ultrasound console at a frequency of 22.5 kHz. The input signal is converted into mechanical oscillations by a piezoelectric transducer. These oscillations are further amplified to produce a back-and-forth movement. Due to the natural elasticity of the soft tissue and the movements of the BoneScalpel, soft tissue is not damaged, while compact bone can be cut. The BoneScalpel is equipped with continuous irrigation using saline solution, which creates a tamponade effect. This can reduce blood loss.

What are the advantages of the BoneScalpel?

The BoneScalpel enables controlled bone cutting with reduced blood loss. Due to its ease of use, it is less tiring on the surgeon's hand and the operating time can be reduced. As the BoneScalpel is tissue-selective, soft tissue is not damaged.
